Ensuring Safe Site Ground Conditions
Build UK members, the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) and the Structural Timber Association (STA) have joined together with the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) and National Federation of Builders (NFB) to promote the need for safe ground conditions on construction sites over the winter period.
Inclement winter weather conditions in the UK can have a detrimental effect on construction site ground conditions and pose a health and safety risk to operatives working on-site, particularly in relation to heavy machinery on soft ground. BCSA, STA, FMB and NFB highlight the importance of main contractors providing detailed ground condition information to sub-contractors at the start of a project, as required by the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, and also monitoring ground conditions throughout the project’s timespan in order to respond to any changes.
The Strategic Forum Plant Safety Group’s free Good Practice Guide for Ground Conditions for Construction Plant provides comprehensive guidance for those working in the construction sector and aims to prevent accidents by ensuring that ground conditions are suitable for heavy lifting equipment used by sub-contractors on construction sites.
