The Unexpected Shift: From Computer Science to Architecture

The moment my daughter declared her desire to become an architect is one I never anticipated. Like a bolt from the blue, it hit us all with an unexpected impact. Previously, she had primarily displayed a tendency to concentrate on computer science at the private liberal arts institution she attended in the northern regions of Maine. Nevertheless, a short course that introduced her to architecture subsequently led her down a completely unanticipated path.

The Unexpected Shift

Just imagine the astonishment that rippled through me as I heard her say, “I want to be an architect”. My own experiences having been grounded more in words and lines of code than in spaces and structures bore no relevance to this newfound interest of hers. She had always shown more inclination towards digital matter rather than tangible constructs. The shift was sudden but not unwelcome – it was just like her to keep us on our toes, endlessly fascinating us with her ever-evolving ambitions.

The Allure of Computer Science

Initially, her heart was firmly set on exploring the realm of computer science. She seemed fascinated by the world of binary digits, program coding, and digital debugging. One might even say she appeared almost destined for a career in the field of computer science, given her commitment towards it during her high school years and since entering her small, privately funded liberal arts college in Northern Maine.

The Path Less Trodden

Of course, nothing could prepare us for the shift in career aspirations. A fleeting introduction to the world of architecture appeared to have upended all her previously established plans. Instead of pursuing a digitally inclined path, she was now interested in creating and defining physical spaces – designing structures that impact the lives of individuals and communities in tangible ways.

The Future is Bright

We were taken aback, but in truth, we couldn’t be more ecstatic. In a world where change is the only constant, embracing new interests and learning from all walks of life is highly encouraged. She might very well design the next iconic landmark – who knows! We support her unconditionally in her aspirations. After all, it is this variety in choices and interests that makes each individual’s journey unique.

Conclusion

The transformation, both surprising and profound, from computer science enthusiast to budding architect has been a joy to witness. A brief introductory course has illuminated a pathway towards a new passion and changed my daughter’s anticipated career trajectory. And while the realization was sudden, we know that architecture will provide her with boundless opportunities to learn, create, and make a positive impact in the world. We look forward to seeing how her fascination with physical space and design shapes her future ventures, as she fearlessly charts her own path in the world of architecture.
